Wider Family Learning
Includes a much wider range of opportunities for adults and children to learn together. It includes opportunities for parents and other adults to share their own skills, knowledge and culture with children and staff in schools and nurseries. As well as the wide range of courses described in this booklet, Alternative Provision usually has a small amount of funding for organisations wanting to develop their own innovative Family Learning programmes. If you wish to discuss your ideas, please contact the Family Learning Service Manager.

Examples of some of the Wider Family Learning Programme are:

Story Sacks
This programme is for parents/carers. Parents/cares choose a book that is appropriate for their child’s level, and bring the book to life. Parents will achieve this by making supportive materials such as puppets, soft toys and games to stimulate reading and language activities.

Computers don’t byte.
This course can be either parent/carer or a joint family programme and is designed for parents who are not familiar with computers. Parents can be disadvantaged in supporting their children’s IT learning and find that far from being able to help their children, they are getting left behind. This course aims to improve their self-confidence, knowledge and understanding.

Share
Share uses a practical ‘hands-on’ approach to involving parents in their children’s learning. It is offered to early years settings, infants, junior, primary, secondary schools and other community settings. Share can only be delivered by a trained Share facilitator.

Share is a fun way to support parents to support their children’s learning. Parents/carers will work with their children at home using a range of exciting Share materials. The materials are structured to complement the classroom teaching of Foundation Stage, KS1, KS2 and KS3 English and Maths and are linked to the Literacy and Numeracy Core Curriculum on specific tasks, such as spelling.

Family Fun with Food
With health being high on national and local government agendas, this programme will cover a variety of topics from physical health, emotional health and well-being, healthy eating and preparing healthy lunch boxes. Learners have the opportunity to progress on to literacy and numeracy Family Learning programmes.

Arts and Crafts
These programmes are designed to offer learners the opportunity to engage in a range of creative, stimulating and innovative activities. Learners can have a go at crafts such at making masks, greetings cards and mobiles, with their children.

PEEP (Peers Early Education Partnership)
PEEP programmes support parents and carers as their children’s first and most important educators, offering ideas and activities to support children’s learning in everyday situations. The programme combines different activities e.g. stories and crafts, on how to make the most of everyday life.
